A young Republican has just thrown his hat in the ring in the race for mayor for the City of Buffalo. YNN's Antoinette DelBel has more on Sergio Rodriguez's candidacy and his plans for the city.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — In front of City Hall on Wednesday, many found out the meaning behind the countdown on the "Who is Sergio" website when 32-year-old Sergio Rodriguez announced his candidacy for mayor of Buffalo.

"It really isn't an issue about Republicans or Democrats, because I don't believe Republicans or Democrats have a monopoly on how to run a city administration effectively," said Rodriguez, (R).

A few weeks ago, signs went up throughout the city asking the question, "Who is Sergio?" Wednesday, the Dominican Republic native made sure residents know who he is and what his plans are for the city.

"This campaign will be about the issues that matter most to the residents of the City of Buffalo - education, employment, crime, poverty."

The Marine Corps veteran holds a bachelor's in business management and master's in organizational leadership, and is coordinator of veterans and military affairs at Medaille. With his experience working with community organizations and mentoring other vets, Rodriguez says he has what it takes to beat incumbent Mayor Byron Brown.

"I think it's time for a different change in the City of Buffalo. I think we're craving that."

Supporters of Rodriguez also say there needs to be a change at City Hall.

"It seems like nothing's changing, and if it is, it's changing very slowly and it needs to change a little quicker," said Jacob Dabb, Buffalo.

"The crime rate, the education system, and I I think those are the most important issues," said Ramon Acevedeo, Buffalo.

Rodriguez hasn't received any endorsements yet, and calls to the Erie County Republican Party were not returned.

So far, he's the only one to announce he's running for mayor.

Mayor Brown has not yet officially announced whether he plans on running for re-election later this year.
