BUFFALO, NY--Western New York's favorite dog literally had its day Saturday as it continues to recover from being set on fire last fall.

Hundreds of admirers came to see Phoenix at the "Paws for Love" fundraiser to benefit the Buffalo Animal Shelter. People brought gifts and treats for the dog, which is still recovering from injuries suffered when police say two teenagers burned it. Mayor Byron Brown even issued a proclamation naming Saturday "Phoenix Day".

The terrier's caregiver said she appreciates the love and attention the dog has received from the community.

Phoenix's foster mother, Judi Bunge, said, "This is actually his first public appearance but I think it's wonderful. He has had a lot of support and I think it's wonderful for him to come out and say hi to his fans".

Shelter volunteers hope to find a permanent home for Phoenix in the coming weeks.
