WEST SENECA, N.Y. — The West Seneca Board of Education voted Monday to close East Elementary School.
The district's fifth-graders will be merged into the two middle schools. Parents of East Elementary kindergartners through fourth-graders can move their children to one of two other elementary schools in the district.
Between the closure and employee reductions, the district will save $7.5 million next year.
While district officials are comfortable closing the school, some parents are concerned with a lack of transparency from the board.
"Changes need to be made in every single school district virtually in the country, so we really went for the academics," said Daniel Nagy, West Seneca Board of Education president.
"The district did not communicate the plan very well, left the community out in the dark and made their decision basically before we even had a chance to comment on it," said Peter Kalenik, West Seneca parent.
The plan will take effect in the fall.
