Report outlines health issues in Tonawanda
TONAWANDA, N.Y. — A study by the state Department of Health says the Town of Tonawanda has a higher percentage of people with certain cancers and birth defects than anywhere else in the state.

It came after community concern about health problems due to exposures from emissions from area industries.

A previous study by the state Department of Environmental Conservation showed that there were elevated levels of benzene and formaldehyde in the air, which are both known to cause cancer.

The new study shows that there are 18 different types of cancer present in the Tonawanda area, but it says this type of study cannot link those cancers to the emissions. That testing area includes Grand Island and Riverside.

The Department of Health is holding a public meeting regarding the study's findings. That's scheduled to be held at 7 p.m. on February 26th at the Sheridan Parkside Community Center.
