NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — Some of Niagara Falls' bravest were honored at a ceremony Friday.
The Niagara Falls Fire Department recognized new recruits, and a couple of promotions. Firefighters took an oath of office and received badges.
Fire officials say the new hires come during a surge in retirements, and say they're excited to welcome the new recruits into the family.
"Once you come into the fire department, we consider it a big family. We're really close knit, you're in the fire hall and they call it a fire house because its like a home. And you get really close," said Chief Thomas Colangelo of the Niagara Falls Fire Department.
The department protects 56,000 people and responds to more than 4,000 calls every year.
