Orleans County Squirrel Slam expected to draw wave of protestors
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- An event that's drawn ire from across the nation takes place today in Orleans County.
The annual Squirrel Slam, a squirrel shooting competition, is a fundraiser for the Holley Fire Department. While animal lovers everywhere call it a nightmare, tickets for the hunt have already sold out.
Cash prizes will be awarded to hunters in different categories, including the largest squirrel shot and the heaviest group of squirrels shot. Any one age 12 and older can participate as long as they have a valid hunting license. The weigh-in will be followed by a dinner.
Animal rights activists are expected to protest at the event.
