ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — A day off from school Monday meant a day full of ice hockey for some local children.
As many as 150 kids took to the ice for Hockey 4 Hearts. It' s an annual charity ice hockey tournament in its fifth year.
Funds were raised with a basket auction, program ads, a puck chuck, and merchandise.
The proceeds will be donated to the cardiac care unit at Women and Children's Hospital; a cause that lets the kids help their peers, and in 2009, their teammate.
"Five years ago, I had a child on my team that was seven years old and had to have open heart surgery, and we decided that we were gonna help the family out," said Tom English, Hockey 4 Hearts chairman. "We came up with the Hockey 4 Hearts, and we've been doing it ever since."
Hockey 4 Hearts has raised more than $20,000 for the Children's Hospital of Buffalo Foundation since 2009.
