CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. — Firefighters gathered at the South Line Fire Company to honor one of their own Wednesday.
Cheektowaga Fire Chief Todd Roland received Liberty Mutual's 2013 Firemark Award for Heroism. Roland was nominated after saving the life of a fellow firefighter last August.
Keith Broad was cutting a two-by-four when the industrial saw he was using nearly amputated his arm.
Though Roland might say otherwise, it was his training as a paramedic that stopped the bleeding until surgeons could operate.
"But if it wasn't for my crew, as well. I mean, they did a phenomenal job," said Roland. "Training was the utmost and it was like the perfect storm, to tell you the truth. The time of day couldn't have worked better. Surgeons were still there, nurses were still there."
Broad has regained 85 percent usage of his arm and hopes to return to active duty.
