BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The young boy injured in a fire in his east side home Friday has passed away.

Buffalo Fire Department Commissioner Garnell Whitfield said three-year-old Malachi Norman was declared brain dead on Saturday. His organs were donated on Sunday.

Norman and his mother, Lequeisha Watkins, 23, were rescued from their Timon Street home after the fire started around 12:30 a.m. Friday. Watkins, 23, was taken to ECMC, where she later died.

Watkins' fiancee was able to escape safely with their two-year-old son.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
